We love supporting and developing the writing of young people and work in a number of disciplines, from nurturing prose and short story writing, to introducing people to scriptwriting and the specifics of writing for the screen and for audio.
Creative Jelly's Creative Writing for Young People courses aim to encourage, develop and nurture a love for writing in young people of all ages. We teach the skills, techniques and creativity to really help develop writing.
Our courses cater for a range of experience and skill, from complete beginners to the more advanced young writer who is already comfortable with the craft.
We also work with young people who are looking to undertake larger writing projects, with some even writing their own novels.
Our courses are led by qualified teachers, with Masters level experience of Creative Writing, all of whom are also fully DBS checked.
These 10-week programmes encourages the development of creative writing in young people, looking at a range of stimuli and styles of writing, and working through techniques and approaches to really help develop their writing.
The group nature of the course means that writing can be shared with an audience and wider feedback gained immediately, as well as having more contributions to stimuli and discussions.
The course works through definitions and techniques, key skills, writing exercises, inspiration and ideas for writing, styles of writing, and each week a story is set to be written. There are also extension options if students have more time or would like to undertake more writing.
At the end of the course, each writer will have a number of pieces of writing they will be proud of, and they will all have the opportunity to have their work published in an anthology, professionally printed by Junoberry Books. There will also be an opportunity for writers to hone their work outside of sessions and looked at by tutors.
There are three courses that can be taken, each one advancing from the previous course:
- Creative Writing: Getting Started
- Creative Writing: Developing your Writing
- Creative Writing: Advanced Writing
There are also three age groups - Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 / Sixth Form.
These 10-week courses are designed to develop the specific skills and techniques that are required for effective scriptwriting, and give students the opportunity to write for the stage. A range of stimuli, playtexts, writers and genres are looked at, and most importantly, students will get writing and practice the craft of scriptwriting.
This course is generally suitable for students who are 13 years and above.

There are three courses that can be taken, each one advancing from the previous course:
- An Introduction to Scriptwriting
- Writing a Play
- Advanced Scriptwriting
At the end of the An Introduction to Scriptwriting course, students will have a number of scenes written for the stage and a clear idea of how to write for the medium. By the end of the Writing a Play course students will be in a position to write their own play, and the Advanced Scriptwriting course builds on this to ensure students have a fully drafted piece that is good enough to be performed!
These 10-week courses work with students on the specifics of the genre of screenwriting and film, with its focus on being a visual medium, and the particular set of rules and approaches that come with this. There is an introduction that works through film as a medium and how writing for screen works, and then further courses that develop writing further into complete screenplays.
There are two age groups available for this course: 13 to 15 years old and 16 and above.
The group nature of the course really suits screenwriting, with the concept of breaking story and writer's rooms a fixture of writing for the screen. It allows for an audience and wider feedback to be gained immediately, as well as having more contributions to stimuli and discussions. There are number of options where you can work on a one-to-one basis with our tutors for a more personalised approach with the content of sessions designed specifically for you and where abouts you are in your creative writing journey. This could be in any medium - prose, scriptwriting, screenwriting or writing for audio, and might involve developing story, working on scripts, refining work, or whatever suits you as an individual.
The one-to-one sessions are bespoke for each young writer, and could be taken as a one-off session to share your writing and gain feedback, or as a block of sessions where you will develop your work over a number of weeks.
Whilst we recommend that students undertake group courses, as there are real benefits of sharing your work with others and gaining feedback as well as looking at other people's work, it is possible to undertake any of the Creative Writing courses as an individual course. You will still receive the same feedback from tutors on your work after each session as well as on your final pieces of writing, but you would undertake the course itself solo. The content would be the same as that outlined on these course information pages.
Coming Soon.
A new course, coming in 2024 that focuses on writing for Audio.
Our courses are run as small online group courses that are safe and fun, and run by experienced, well qualified tutors who offer constructive guidance and feedback.
Each course is divided into a number of sessions - usually 10. At the start of each week (or in some cases fortnight), the new session, and all of the materials are released.
You then have the week to work through this which means you can do so at your own pace and at any time that suits you.
You will then complete and submit the assignment on the forum by the session deadline.
The sessions themselves usually last for an hour, and you can complete the course in this time if you were to do the minimum. However, there is also always an independent piece of writing that should be undertaken alongside the session, which puts into practice all that has been looked at within that week's learning.
Also, the forum is there to interact with and material can be worked through in more depth or over a longer period of time, and there are always extension tasks that mean you can spend much more time if you have it available and want to spend more time writing.
So, whilst the uploaded session may only be an hour long, you could spend a number of hours each week on the content.
Each week there are 7 steps to undertake:
1. Complete the session. The session materials come in the form of videos, podcasts, written notes, and extracts to read and work on.
2. You complete the assignment set - usually a practical piece of work.
3. You share this assignment with the rest of the group and the tutors.
4. You receive feedback from the other people in your group as well as giving feedback to others.
5. Your tutors give you detailed, professional feedback.
6. You reflect on the assignment and your feedback, and share / discuss what you have learnt.
7. You review and improve your work using all of what you have learnt and the feedback you have received from the previous steps.
A group course means that there are a small number of students who are taking the course at the same time. They may be from all different parts of the country, or even from different countries. Everyone will be unified by the group forum which enables sharing of work, feedback and discussion to take place. These forums are monitored to ensure that all content is appropriate and safe.
You can work through the learning materials whenever suits you, day or night, wherever you are in the world.
There are a number of benefits to a group course.
Although writing is often seen as a solitary activity, there are huge benefits to sharing your work and putting it out there for others to see and read. The social element is another key factor and having the support and feedback of others is a great tool to develop your writing and your confidence in your work. You will be able to trust those in your group and as you are all going through the same sessions at the same time, this support is relevant and extremely useful.
There is still plenty of solo work that needs to be undertaken, however, and the majority of the writing will be done on an individual basis.
Cost is another factor, as the price of a group session is considerably lower than one-to-one sessions, which means that the courses are accessible for a wider range of young people. At Creative Jelly we aim to encourage young people from a wide and diverse background to develop their writing and tell their stories - we see cost as a major part of allowing this to happen.
The majority of people now have very active and busy lifestyles which means that live courses often don't fit in with other commitments. A live course means that you need to be in a set place at a set time, whereas our group forum based courses are flexible and can fit into anyone's schedule.
You can choose to watch the session as soon as it is posted or at any other time in the week, it is flexible and completely up to you, meaning that you can work the course around your other commitments. It also means you can change the time you undertake the session if you need to.
This allows a much broader range of people to be part of the course, which of course makes for a richer experience for those on it.
However, we know that one of the obvious benefits of a live course is the ability to ask questions and receive answers immediately. We have clear set times when a tutor is online and can be asked questions so that an immediate response is given, as well as questions being able to be posted on the forum for tutors to answer.
There remains the need for personalisation and a group course will not necessarily give you this unless it is coupled with individual feedback and the opportunity for some one-to-one time. Our courses do exactly this with tutor feedback on each assignment set as well as a detailed report at the end of the course.
Some of the courses also have the opportunity for one-to-one contact so that writer's still have the full focus of a tutor at a key moment. This is most often at the stage when a piece of work has been drafted and there is a real benefit from spending time talking about the work in this manner.
Our coaches are all well qualified, both as teachers and as experts in their disciplines, and are trained to MA level in Creative Writing. They are all fully DBS checked to ensure care and safety.
The nature of the work being recorded and set as assignments means that parents and guardians can have full access to all that is being sent out to students.
We are very lucky that we are partnered with the new publishers Junoberry Books. This gives the writers we work with the opportunity to have their work professionally published and recorded in audio.
Many of our courses culminate in the opportunity to have work published which is an excellent step for any writer.
